This tranquil little village is easily overlooked by the tourist but has a surprising wealth of features to recommend itself.
Canoeing and sailing are favourite past times on the sheltered Loch Goil and the Scouting Organisation has a residential outdoor centre in the village. Lochgoilhead's ancient church is also well worth visiting.
If you carry on down the road to Carrick Castle a road to nowhere by the way, you will see this castle majestically sitting on the edge of Loch Goil. The Carrick Castle keep was constructed in the 1400's and Mary, Queen of Scots visited here in 1563.The keep was pillaged and burned in 1685 during Argyll's rebellion. The property was passed to the Earls of Dunmore. Don't know who owns it now, but the structure is being restored.
