The town of Mallaig is a fishing port of about 1000 people, situated some 150 miles north of Glasgow. Once Europe's busiest herring port, it is still a major fishing centre, landing large catches of prawns and other shellfish and, as the most westerly harbour on the British mainland, it plays a vital part as one of the most important lifeboat stations on the west coast of Scotland.
Mallaig is also called the Road to the Isles as it has ferries that go to the Isle of Skye, Eigg, Rum & Muck and is therefore a very important port for the islanders so they can get their essential needs from the mainland.
